The July 1st 2026 Asian English Forbidden & Limited List has landed, and while it brings some long‑awaited adjustments, it also leaves glaring absences. As an AE player watching this unfold, I can’t help but feel the list is both cautious and incomplete. Let’s break it down.

Every quarter, AE drops a new Forbidden & Limited List to reshape the format. On June 27th right after the World Championship 2026 Asia Qualifiers concluded, the July 2026 AE list was revealed, bringing sweeping changes across multiple generic engines. Here’s a quick recap of the adjustments:

No changes
This section staying untouched is surprising, especially with certain floodgates still running rampant.
Bystial Magnahmut — A justified hit. Its power and utility made it overdue for restriction.
Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue — A consistency blow and a turn-zero check for Vanquish Soul. Its Level 5 body also fueled the K9 engine, so this hit matters.
Rahu Dracotail — Mirroring the OCG, this cut sharply reduces Dracotail’s consistency.
Synchro Overtake — Another OCG-aligned hit. With Kewl Tune freshly released in AE, the focus seems to be on trimming indirect engines first. This slightly slows the deck without touching its core.
Dimensional Barrier — Long overdue. This trap can single-handedly shut down entire mechanics when drawn going first. Honestly, I feel it belongs in the Forbidden section, but for now it remains at 1. That means Triple Tactics Thrust still has access to it as a toolbox option.
Red Reboot — Another overdue hit. AE finally adapts the limit, curbing its oppressive “no traps allowed” swing potential.
Branded Fusion — Personally, I think this card deserves to be Limited outright. Still, a semi-limit is a cautious step, especially since Branded is relatively new in AE.
No changesMy Take

This list feels like a nudge to the format rather than a full reshaping. The hits to Vanquish Soul, Dracotail, and Dimensional Barrier are meaningful, but leaving cards like Maxx “C”, Droll & Lock Bird, and Called by the Grave untouched keeps the format tilted toward oppressive hand traps and negation.
Kewl Tune and Branded remain poised to dominate, and while the semi-limit on Branded Fusion slows things slightly, it won’t stop the deck from being a top contender. The absence of stronger hits suggests the focus is on seeing how Creation Pack 12 and Chaos Origins shake up the meta before bigger bans arrive.
Overall, July’s AE list is cautious but incomplete. It reins in some consistency engines and overdue traps, but leaves several format-defining cards unchecked. Expect Kewl Tune and Branded to remain forces in the metagame, while players brace for fresh themes from upcoming sets.
